Our US Hot-Rolled Coil (HRC) price assessment is an emerging US benchmark that provides a daily representation of how much rolled steel is being bought and sold in the US Hot-Rolled Coil spot market.
It is based on a standard specification of Hot-Rolled Coil with chemical and dimensional tolerances based on ASTM A 1011-06a Commercial Type B material. Other specifications of Hot-Rolled Coil are normalized back to this grade, based on prevailing market extras. It takes into account standard spot-market order sizes of up to 500 st of material 48-60 inches wide, with thicknesses ranging from 0.083-0.37 inches (other order sizes or dimensions are normalized to this standard).
Rolled Steel Coil product specifications are updated periodically to remain reflective of current market practices. The price assessment is published on an ex-works Midwest (Indiana) mill basis and the US domestic market has migrated toward greater use of this assessment as a benchmark since early 2013.
Platts, on its own and through the 2011 acquisition of Steel Business Briefing, has been assessing the spot price of Hot-Rolled Coil for more than a decade and was the first to publish Hot-Rolled Steel Coil pricing on a daily basis.
Our thought leadership has brought about unprecedented transparency in the Hot-Rolled Coil market, achieved through active market-testing of data and the publication of a daily spot market commentary.
